Most of us are lucky enough to have a fantastic support unit throughout the holidays. We are able to come together with family and friends and celebrate the good times over Christmas and the New Year. But many Australian’s aren’t so fortunate. Most of us are lucky enough to have a fantastic support unit throughout the holidays. We are able to come together with family and friends and celebrate the good times over Christmas and the New Year. But many Australian’s aren’t so fortunate.

Seeing as Christmas is a time for giving, there are countless volunteer opportunities around Australia where you can help those in need. Continue reading for suggestions on which organisations are looking for your help during this holiday period.

New South Wales

Across New South Wales, tens of thousands of patients will spend Christmas Day in hospital – many without friends or family to visit. You can turn a grim prospect into a cheery time with a bedside visit. NSW Health recommends you contact your local hospital and speak to the community liaison officer for more information, or visit their website.

Wesley Mission is seeking event coordinators for Christmas lunches in Sydney. It’s a one-off volunteering activity from 10am to 3pm on Christmas Day. If you’re a handy individual with a background in hospitality or event management, it could be right up your alley.

The Smith Family is looking for volunteers to help pack and deliver Christmas gifts on December 15, while Vision Australia needs gift wrappers for the annual Myer Gift Wrap fundraiser. There are plenty of participating stores, so keep an eye on the registration page for more information.

Alternatively, there are lots of other fundraising initiatives that need helpers around the state, including Basket Bridge and Melbourne City Mission.

All across the state, Cancer Council Queensland is looking for volunteers to help with gift wrapping, raffles and more. There’s no experience necessary and heaps of locations, from Brisbane to Cairns and everywhere in between.

Are Christmas Carols your favourite part of the holidays? Are you a good communicator who loves seeing a show come together? The Queensland Services Heritage Band Association is after multiple event coordinators for its Bayside Carols Event. You can jump in straight away and be the beating heart of this exceptional Christmas show.

South Australia

The Hutt St Centre has been assisting the homeless and underprivileged in South Australia for more than 60 years. You can be an Angel for a Day by providing breakfast to the disadvantaged, fundraise and volunteer, or simply make a Christmas donation.

Adelaide residents who can spare a few hours of their day are welcome to join the Leukaemia Foundation at Rundle Mall or Adelaide Centre Plaza for Christmas gift wrapping and fundraising.

Western Australia

You can volunteer with Mission Australia in Perth this Christmas as it delivers compassion, hope and celebration to WA’s most marginalised and disadvantaged citizens. Christmas Lunch in the Park is a huge event every year, and the charity needs your assistance.

St Patrick’s Community Support Centre is seeking fundraising volunteers to help put on its annual Long Table Christmas Dinner.

Make this Christmas the best one yet by joining Colony 47 in its annual Community Christmas. It provides Tasmanians in need with a traditional lunch and friendship. There were 450 attendees at last year’s lunch, and more expected in 2018, so Colony 47 need all the help they can get!

The Salvos are looking for volunteer Christmas elves to help sort toys for distribution. Anyone 16 or over can participate.

Northern Territory

For NT residents who have a little extra time on their hands and a knack for wrapping presents, Somerville Community Services is looking for help at various shopping centres throughout December.

Christmas can be especially tough for people suffering from addiction. FDS (Family Drug Support) is asking for additional support line volunteers for the busy holiday period.

Australian Capital Territory

Food Bank NSW & ACT is always looking for additional helping hands as it services more than 560 charities and welfare agencies.

There are also plenty of volunteer positions over the holiday period with St Vinnies. As a Summer Volunteer you can give back as a shop assistant, administrator, cashier, merchandiser or a range of other specialised roles.
