Catholic Outlook World Youth Day 2013

In July 2013, photographer Alphonsus Fok joined the World Youth Day (WYD) tour on behalf of Catholic Outlook (Diocese of Parramatta). Alphonsus was charged with photographing Bishop Anthony Fisher OP and a group of pilgrims as they travelled from Lima in Peru, to Iguazu Falls in Argentina and on to WYD in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Over 1800 young Australian pilgrims and 16 Australian Bishops made the journey to the Brazilian capital with the largest groups from the Archdiocese of Sydney and the Diocese of Parramatta. "WYD continues to engage the young of our Church in Australia with WYD Rio being our largest pilgrimage to a non-European WYD" said Bishop Fisher OP.

While in Lima, the pilgrims assisted with a series of projects organised by Caritas Lima, an initiative of the Archbishop of Lima. The pilgrims were involved in two major projects and planted more than 150 trees in an effort to help green the barren landscape of Lima, decrease the erosion and purify the air.

The diocese and some benefactors, in association with Caritas, also funded the building of ten Houses of Hope in the El Augustino favela. Providing poor families, many of who have spent their entire lives living in corrugated iron shacks, with a new two-roomed house.

For more information, the pilgrims' progress has been documented here.

CCI provided funding for a photographer to cover the WYD pilgrimage for Catholic Outlook (Diocese of Parramatta).
